For the second consecutive year, McNeese softball is the unanimous preseason favorite to repeat as Southland Conference champions, the league announced Wednesday. The Cowgirls received 22 of 24 first place votes with head coaches and sports information directors not allowed to vote for their own team. Abilene Christian received the other two first place votes. ACU and Nicholls are picked for a second place tie followed by Lamar and Central Arkansas to round out the Top 5.
McNeese has won six regular season titles, the most by a current Southland Conference school and tied the most in conference history with its title in 2017. Former SLC member Texas State also won six regular season titles. The Cowgirls have won four of the last five conference titles including the last two regular season and tournament titles. McNeese is coming off a 2017 season that saw McNeese post a 43-18 record, tying the school record for victories. Along the way, McNeese broke three and tied three team records.

The defending Southland Conference champion McNeese Cowboy baseball team will open up the 2018 season on Friday when it hosts former Cowboy player and head coach Todd Butler and his Wichita State Shockers.
"It's time to play somebody else," said fifth-year head coach Justin Hill who is the first coach in school history to win 30 or more games in his first four seasons. "There's a lot of competition this year. We lost some guys that were key contributors for us last year to graduation and the draft. We have a lot of guys returning and a lot of new players who did a good job in the fall."
